Curriculum

Transition Year is a one year programme provided by the school between the Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate programmes.

Its aims are:

To provide education for maturity with emphasis on social awareness and increased social competence

To promote general, technical and academic skills with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and self-directed learning

To provide education through experience of adult and working life as a basis for personal development and maturity.

The Transition Year programme at Gortnor Abbey has been designed within the guidelines of the Department of Education and Science to meet the needs of our students through utilising school and community resources.  The special features of the Gortnor Abbey Transition Year Programme include:

The Transition Year Website
This site provides guidance for students, teachers & parents about this unique one year programme for students aged 15/16. It provides an overview of the activities in which transition year students can engage. It also captures some of the dynamism of the Transition Year as a novel way to encourage real world teaching and learning techniques.
