December Newsletter

Social Dancing:

Following a long standing tradition here in Gortnor Abbey, this year’s Transition Years, with the help of Gerry, are learning how to waltz, whilst building confidence and having a good time.

We are now 4 lessons in, and with things already getting competitive, teachers and students alike are all very much looking forward to the end of year night!

On February 16th, TYs will compete for prizes, like best couple or best attendance & here's a link

Mini Company Interviews :

As part of the formation of our mini companies, representatives from Coca Cola came to the school to interview us and give us our final positions. Each student handed in a cover letter, CV and application form and had lots of positions to choose from, including Managing Director and HR manager. As the photos show; the interviews were taken very seriously by our students, and many dressed up to show this.

They asked us important questions and gave us great tips for future interviews. It was an amazing experience and we all had a wonderful time getting the jobs we knew we deserved!

Gaisce Trip 2016 :

The Transition Year classes embarked, bright eyed and bushy tailed, on their Gaisce Adventure trip, on 19th October 2016. We began our 25km walk outside Newport until we finally reached Westport. The purpose of trip was to teach students to be self-sufficient, with each group managing different tasks. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Croagh Patrick Hostel and can’t wait for more trips like these!

Colaiste Uisce:

The T.Y students were hurled into the year by visiting Coláiste Uisce on our second day back. We were introduced to exciting activities like sailing, surfing, archery and relay games and each group was given the opportunity to sample them all! It was a brilliant day for all and a great way to enjoy some quality time with each other after the long break!

Another Great Year in Store for the Bank!

After a long term of planning and hard work, the Gortnor Abbey School Bank is officially up and running! Over 50 accounts have been opened already, and there’s still time to open and activate an account to be in with a chance of winning some great prizes!

The bank will be open every Wednesday in the canteen at 1:15 for the rest of the year.

Gills Driving School:

The transition year students were given the opportunity to explore the world of driving in November! The Gills Driving School visited us to teach us the basics of how to drive as well as a talk on the theory test requirements. We got a voucher for driving lessons all and can’t wait to put our newfound skills into action!

Cluanín House :

The members of Cluanín house come and visit us every Thursday and we take great joy in playing games with them and getting to know them. We make quizzes for them, play board games and get to know new things about the members every week. It’s definitely an amazing aspect of TY!
